The short answer

An ESG audit verifies disclosures you have already made. An ESG assessment tells you where you stand before you disclose. For most Indian SMEs — and for listed companies beginning their BRSR journey — an assessment comes first. The audit follows once disclosure practices and data systems are in place. Starting with an audit before an assessment is like asking for exam marking before you have written the paper.

What is an ESG audit?

An ESG audit (formally: ESG assurance) is an independent third-party verification of a company's ESG disclosures. The auditor reviews ESG data — energy consumption, emissions, water use, labour metrics, governance practices — and issues an assurance report confirming the data is accurate, complete, and fairly presented. In India, SEBI's BRSR Core framework mandates limited assurance for the top 150 listed companies from FY2024, expanding to top 1000 by FY2027. EU buyers may also require supplier ESG assurance under CSDD/EUDR frameworks.

Cost: ₹5–25L for limited assurance; ₹15–50L+ for reasonable assurance. Provided by Big 4 or specialist ESG assurance firms.

What is an ESG assessment?

An ESG assessment is a structured diagnostic that evaluates a company's current ESG maturity — where it stands today, what gaps exist relative to disclosure requirements or stakeholder expectations, and what needs to change. It is not a verification of existing disclosures; it is a gap analysis that precedes disclosure. An ESG assessment is the right starting point for: SMEs facing export buyer ESG requirements, listed companies preparing for BRSR compliance, and businesses seeking ESG-linked financing from banks or DFIs.

IBEAN's ESG Readiness Assessment covers BRSR Core alignment, EU CSDD/EUDR supply chain requirements, and DPDP Act 2023 (governance dimension) — with a prioritized 12-month action roadmap.

The right ESG sequence for Indian businesses

1

ESG Assessment (IBEAN)

Understand current ESG maturity — environmental, social, governance. Identify gaps vs BRSR Core, EU CSDD, or lender requirements. Get a prioritized action roadmap.

2

Gap closure (12 months)

Implement the priority actions — data collection systems, policy documentation, emissions tracking, supplier code of conduct, governance improvements.

3

ESG Disclosure (BRSR / GRI)

Prepare your first formal ESG disclosure — BRSR report, sustainability report, or EU CSDD supplier declaration — using the data and systems now in place.

4

ESG Audit / Assurance

Engage a third-party assurance provider for limited or reasonable assurance on your BRSR Core metrics. By this stage, your data and systems are audit-ready.
